Intimate Understanding.

I have been thinking lately about Jesus and what he shared with those around him. You see Jesus read the Torah and not the New Testament. What he shared was completely out of the box and new. He introduced a God that no one at the time was able to see nor understand as they were mainly limited by what they read and others told them about Him.

Those that thought they knew were repulsed and disgusted by what they heard Jesus say. Their safe foundations of knowledge were shaken and so was their confidence and position in society. Such was the shock that it led them to kill God himself on a cross. Yes they thought they knew yet they didn’t because all they had was knowledge without any understanding.

Today many of us bask on the fact that we know the scriptures inside out yet though this might be the case at the same time we have very little understanding of who God is and what he is like. If you don’t agree with me just look at the way we love each other. For many of us being right is far more important than loving someone else which is what Jesus encouraged us to do. Our knowledge based approach means that often just like the pharisees tried to box him into the Torah we try and box him into the New Testament. We do this in order to feel safe but in the process we miss him and often like the pharisees kill what he is wanting to show us and do in and through us.

May I suggest today that the New Testament is not the final edit but merely a starting point of reference. It is but a finger that is pointing to someone much bigger and wonderful than any text could possibly describe or introduce to us. The problem many of us have is that we have fallen in love with the finger and in the process are missing what we are supposed to be seeing and understanding which is what the finger is pointing us to. Which is a journey filled with mystery where we discover each day little by little who He is and in the process who we really are in Him.

Remember if all you know about God is what you gain from reading the scriptures then you know very little about him. He is not someone that is supposed to be read. He is someone that is supposed to be experienced!

Have a great weekend!
