You Set The Pace

Yesterday afternoon as I do most afternoons I went to pick Anabella, my 3 year old daughter, from her nursery where she spends most of her day. Today unlike other days I allowed Anabella to walk on her own without me carrying her to the car. This was about a 75 yard walk altogether. As you can imagine the walk took quite a while which meant me having time to contemplate what I was observing.

It struck me that for me to stay next to her I needed to slow right down. To expect her to walk at my pace was not only unreasonable but plain and simply impossible. I could have of course gone much faster by picking her up and not letting her walk however this would have worked for me but not the same way for her.

When we walk with our heavenly Dad often it seems like things are very slow and even at times at a complete stand still. Many of us complain and blame God for being too slow when in fact He is walking at the pace that we are. Yes like me He could pick us up and make the whole thing happen a lot quicker. However if He chose to do this we would remain infants unable to discover His nature, our true identity, and potential. This is because when we walk with Him we are involved with Him. We are sharpen as we become an active part of the journey instead of just being along for the ride. It is very important to always remember that we are invited into a walk and not a plane ride with God which takes us from A to B as quickly as possible.

It is very true that there is a time to go fast and there is a time to go slow, however many of us often feel that we tend to experience the slow bit and not so often the fast bit. Clearly there can be many reasons for this taking place. However in my experience thus far I have come to understand that it is always wise to take some time and consider that this could be happening because we may be choosing to walk at this pace, and not because God is deliberately putting the parking brake on in our lifeā€¦
